Bari-Uma Ramen, Jaya Shopping Centre

Hello!

This is a bit late but better late than never.

It was le boyfriend's birthday and he decided on Ramen for his birthday dinner. We wanted to try something new as well so we opted for Bari-Uma Ramen at Jaya Shopping Centre after looking at several blog posts on Top Ramen in KL.

The ramen shop is located inside the mall so just park inside the building since it's pretty jam in that area.

So sorry guys but I was willing a little unwell at the time so I might be a bit biased.

The interior was the typical Japanese setting with the daiso tea cups with the sakura on it. I wonder why a lot of places opt for daiso stuff...is it cheaper?? Anyway, there weren't a lot of people there that night.

Looking at the menu, we ordered ramen, gyoza and yakitori! I was quite surprised that they had yakitori so it was a must try. Le boyfriend had a Noritama-Uma Ramen while I had a Kara-Uma Ramen which was the spicy version.

Kara-Uma Ramen (RM26)

Noritama-Uma Ramen (RM29)

Presentation wise, it was nice but taste wise...it was a totally different taste compared to the usual ramens you get at Marutama or Ippudo. The char siu tasted like the typical siu yok (roast pork) you get at chicken rice shops. Moving onto the broth...all I can say is that it did not taste like the typical ramen broth and I was not impressed.

Gyoza (RM11)

The gyoza was sub par while the yakitori was depressing. They basically chopped meat and vegetables and skewered them. You can tell by now how disappointed I was with the food.

Green Tea & Black Sesame Ice cream (RM7.90 each)

At the end, we also ordered ice cream cause what could go wrong. Rite? The ice cream was obviously untouched for a very long time judging by how much ice crystals there were on top and inside the scoop

My verdict? Never going back again. If you want to try something different then go ahead but really not my thing.

That's it for this post!
Cheers!

Kaffa Espresso Bar, Damansara Uptown [First Glance]

Hey coffee junkies,

Part of my coffee experimentation journey brings me to places that I would never step into such as the Kaffa Espresso Bar in Damansara Uptown a.k.a. DU. It was right after dinner at Epicuro with the gang and we were hunting for dessert. Softsrve was closed by the time we got there so we just drove around and spotted Kaffa.

Going into it, it was a typical rustic styled cafe with dim lighting and decorated with thrinkets from the 1980's. Not that I'm saying it's bad but it's getting a little generic.

Going through their menu, I spotted their Salted Caramel Macchiato! Salted caramel anything is good to me and le boyfriend especially when done right. Ordered that and a cup of chai latte cause I didn't want to risk an atomic bomb in my tummy when I still wasn't sure if coffee didn't set it off. =S

Anyway, we grabbed the high table and what do ya know! Everyone brought our their phones...including me but your phone can only take you so far. I scanned the cafe and what did I find but JENGA! I think I have only played jenga 3 times in my entire life so jenga was fun.

It's good to be able to strategise and try and sabotage your friends once in a while. =D I have to say thumbs up for the board games since not every cafe provides games.

I know you guys have been waiting for photos of the drinks so here they are!

Salted Caramel Macchiato (RM13.80)

The Salted Caramel Macchiato was pretty good and pretty too! The flower latte art reminded me of a sunflower - which is my favourite flower!! =D The taste was good too as it wasn't too bitter and the salted caramel provided a nice accent to it. Sometimes, there would be tiny crystallised pieces of salted caramel and it provided a slight crunch to the drink. Love it!!

Chai Latte (RM11)

The Chai Latte was good it you go for the type with foam and cream I think? Kind of like the Lipton Chai Latte sachets sold at Jaya Grocer which is delicious. On the other hand, do you want to go all the way to a cafe for stuff that taste like instant latte? Maybe once in a while...

My verdict? Definitely a good place to chill and play the 'put all the phones in the middle and whoever grabs their phone first pays for drinks!' game. I would so go back to Kaffa.

That's it for this post!
Cheers!

Second Sunday, Damansara Jaya [First Glance]

Hey guys!

I'm sure you've noticed the [First Glance] in the title. I recently realised that the main reason for not posting some of the restaurant reviews is because I only tried one or two items from the menu and I feel that that is not enough to properly review a restaurant. So, instead of having a full on review, I shall just say what I think of the food so far and what I would like to try the next time I visit the place.

So...Second Sunday...it would be nice if there really was a second Sunday but there isn't sadly...oh well! Second Sunday is a new player in the scene which has been opened for almost 3 months now. I was nearby on business and decided to have a bite for lunch.

It's pretty easy to spot the place with its giant lettering but parking is a troublesome person so good luck! =D

Walking into the cafe, it was another rustic designs interior with minimal decorations. The simpler the better type of style is in now but I wish they would have more sound absorbent decos or furnishings because the echo was quite bad. Lucky for me, there were only a few tables filled so the noise level was kept low.

I grabbed a menu off the rack and proceeded to sit next to the counter with a nice view of the cafe. I was in the mood for something savoury since it was lunch but I also really wanted to try their pancakes...such a dilemma...so what did I do? No...I did not order two dishes! I opted for the Sunday's Mancake which is a pancake with bacon and strawberry compote. A mix of savoury and sweet sometimes works so I was hopeful. A little too hopeful sad to say.

(Sunday's Mancake RM19)

It looked interesting with the bacon stacked with the pancakes and the strawberry compote at the side. They are very generous with bacon which is good but the compote was terrible! I forced myself to eat 2 pancakes with the compote and the other 2 with the bacon but even seperated...the compote was terrible.

I love sweet stuff so don't get me wrong, this compote was just not to my liking. Bacon was good though! Who doesn't like bacon?! The pancakes were quite ordinary I have to say...kinda like a normal premade batch of pancakes you can find in boxes.

(Green Tea Latte RM10)

On the other hand, I got myself a green tea latte. Must always try the green tea lattes! It had good taste this one as it was not too sweet and not too overloaded with the matcha. Albeit a bit too heavy with the foam but a little stirring helps. It also came with 2 pieces of their homemade chocolate chip cookies! They were yummy!  =)

My verdict so far? Never gonna order the Mancake again - gonna leave that up to the man! (If you get what I mean!) Definitely going back to try their pandan pancake with gula melaka sauce and their coffeez!

That's it for this post!
Cheers!

Good Friend's Cafe, SS15

Hey guys!

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

I'm posting a special mother's day review on the cafe that we had brunch at to celebrate the occasion!

My own mother is currently travelling Vietnam with my father so I tagged along le boyfriends fams mother's day brunch at Good Friend's Cafe in SS15. Le boyfriend and I were wondering how we never passed this place before when we've been to SS15 so many times. Oh well, time to try!

Review online and on foursquare quote the cafe as a good place for children and I can see why. It is a very homey cafe which is spacious and fun to run around in. There's even a kid's corner at the back!

With a party of seven adults and one child, we were seated at a round table in front of the entrance. The menu's were printed in the form of a magazine which is pretty cool considering that it was a home themed cafe.

From the foursquare tips, I decided to order Baked Eggs (frst time ordering it ever!) while le boyfriend had the Baked Cheese Penne Carbonara. The rest of the family ordered Chicken Mushroom Roll, Eggs Atlantic, Mixed Grill, Homemade Pesto Spaghetti, and Baba's Favourite.

Now let's get too carried away with ourselves...I know you're all dying to know what the food looks like but let's start with drinks shall we.

*Please know that I did not get to try all the food so I can only comment on appearance and comments from others on some.

Let's start off with my drink shall we. If you follow my instagram @chronosz then you'd already know that I am doing a coffee experiment to find out which types of coffee makes me run to the throne! Today, I ordered a Salted Caramel Latte because...I LOVE SALTED CARAMEL!

(Salted Caramel Iced Latte RM12)

The drink came out quite pretty but there wasn't even a hint of salted caramel that I could taste...it was super disappointing and the latte wasn't all that nice either...

(Salted Caramel Milk RM9)

Le boyfriend immediately decided on Salted Caramel Milk cause HE LOVES SALTED CARAMEL TOO! That was disappointing too...there was a taste but you can't really make it out as salted caramel...

 (Passion Fruit Vinegar RM10)

 (Cranberry Vinegar RM10)

 (Cappuccino RM10)

(Apple Cucumber Juice RM11)

The rest of the fam had Passion Fruit Vinegar, Cranberry Vinegar, a Cappuccino, a Liberica Syphon (no pic), and Apple Cucumber Juice. I thought the juice was pretty cool since it came in a bucket of ice like how a bottle of wine would. I also thought the stirrers were really cute with the mini drinks at the top.

Oops! It's not time for the main course yet! Be patient...first we have the appetisers which was soup! Soup is always a good starter for any occasion...trust me!

(Grilled Pumpkin & Carrot Soup RM9)

Le boyfriend and I ordered a Grilled Pumpkin & Carrot Soup. It was quite good albeit a little diluted but the taste was there.

Wild Mushroom Soup (RM9)

Seafood Bisque Soup (RM18)

The rest of the fam ordered a Wild Mushroom Soup and Seafood Bisque Soup. There were rave reviews on the seafood bisque! No drop of soup was left in the bowl when we they were done!

Now! Finally we get to the food! Before you all hyperventilate, let's spam so photos!

 Baba's Favourite (RM22)

 (Mixed Grill RM45)

 (Chicken Mushroom Roll RM28)

 (Eggs Atlantic RM16)

 (Homemade Pesto Spaghetti RM14)

 (Penne Carbonara RM12)

(Baked Egg RM18)

Satisfied? I hope not cause I haven't told you how they all taste yet! First up is Baba's Favourite which is your run of the mill nasi lemak but it was the last to come among all the food and poop le bf papa was so upset and it was nothing special. =(

Second is the Mixed Grill which you can guess from the name is a combination of grilled food which included salmon, sausages, eggs, chicken and potatoes. I did not get to try this but they loved eating it especially the salmon with its crispy skin .

Next is the Chicken Mushroom Roll...I'm not really a big fan of mushrooms and this is one dish that did not catch my eye. Creativity wise...the smiley face was cute but taste wise...well, it didn't hit the bar.

Fourth is the Eggs Atlantic which I did not get to try but let's just say no one was asking for seconds. The green looking spaghetti a.k.a. the Homemade Pesto Spaghetti sadly got the same reaction...for me, the best pesto pasta is still Miss Ellie's Teahouse Pesto Fettuccine!

Finally, we have come to mine and le boyfriends dishes which were the infamous Penne Carbonara and the Baked Eggs. We were wondering why the penne was cheaper than the rest but you can tell from the photo how small it was. However, small as it was penne is all carbs as well as the cheese and carbonara sauce. It was as good as any baked cheese carbonara so not too bad.

The baked eggs...ah...a deep pan with eggs, sausage, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower and baked in cheese. That was the first time I'd eaten baked eggs and it was quite good!

My verdict? Alright? The food was so-so and the service was a bit disappointing especially when they forget orders. Coincidentally, there was a little girl's birthday party being held at the back and the owners were busy tending to it. My observation...please do not ignore your other customers even when you have an event going on...

I will probably not be returning to Good Friend's anytime soon but do try their baked eggs and the environment is nice so chilling so up to you guys to try.

That's it for this post! Let me leave you with a photo of le boyfriend, me and a cute little girl a.k.a. le boyfriend's niece. =)
Cheers!
